As a result of recent advances in biotechnology and in genetic engineering, many biopharmaceutical drugs, such as peptides and proteins, are currently on the market or in clinical trials. At present over 75 protein or peptide-based drugs are available to patients worldwide. As more than 100 such drugs are in the human clinical trials, the market for protein and peptide-based drugs will continue to grow.

However, it must be noted that a widespread use of proteins/peptides as effective biopharmaceuticals is hindered by the fact that a patient-convenient route of administration (e.g., orally) frequently cannot be applied due to the susceptibility of proteins/peptides to biological degradation, such as hydrolysis and enzymatic proteolysis.

Therefore, most protein/peptide-based drugs are delivered via parenteral routes to the patient. But even when delivered by parenteral or pulmonary routes, proteins/peptides frequently possess a limited half-life thus requiring more administrations.
